Going to the theater is already an undertaking; after you pick a movie, you have to haul your butt there, decide which novelty popcorn tub to buy, and choose the perfect seats. Finally, after too many previews and ads, the feature begins—and while the usual amount of people dicking around on their phones is to be expected, what would you think if everyone around you started singing along?
That’s been a frequent occurrence in screenings of Wicked, apparently—which is not entirely surprising for a movie based on a beloved, long-running Broadway musical packed with catchy tunes. While Wicked will no doubt lend itself to specially designated “sing-along” screenings in the future, there’s also the very real fact that not all audience members who plop down $15 or more for a ticket want to hear the person behind them warbling along with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. But one movie star with his own musical hitting theaters doesn’t see a problem with that.
“Especially if you love music, that’s the fun part,” Dwayne Johnson, who plays Maui in Moana 2, told BBC News at the UK premiere of the new Disney sequel.
And he didn’t stop there: “Sing! You’ve paid your hard earned money for a ticket, and you’ve gone into a musical, and you’re into it. Sing.”
There’s less of a danger that you’ll encounter in-audience crooning if you hit Moana 2 right when it opens (tomorrow), since whoever goes opening weekend will be among the first to hear the movie’s new slate of songs. Depending on how popular the movie is, that may change the longer it’s in theaters. You’ve been warned, but just remember: the Rock approves.
